What is the Shortage Occupation List and what are the benefits of being offered a job that is on the list?

The shortage occupation list sets out jobs that are deemed to be in shortage in the UK. These roles can be filled by skilled worker from outside the UK as employers are unable to easily find workers from within the UK to fill these vacancies.

Which Sectors are Currently on the UK Skills Shortage List?

The government releases an up-to-date list of all the roles and industries that urgently require more staff orhave vacancies that cannot be filled by the local labour market.

If your job is listed on the shortage occupation list, you could apply for a skilled worker visa if you meet all the other requirements:

  • Health services and public health managers and directors
  • Residential, day and domiciliary care managers and proprietors
  • Chemical scientists – only jobs in the nuclear industry
  • Biological scientists and biochemists
  • Physical scientists – specific jobs listed
  • Social and humanities scientists – only archaeologists
  • Engineers across all industries, such as civil engineers, mechanical engineers, electronics, and electrical engineers
  • IT and software development specialists and analysts
  • Medical practitioners and radiographers
  • Pharmacists
  • Psychologist
  • Physiotherapists
  • Physiotherapists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Speech and language therapists
  • Social workers
  • Paramedics
  • Nursing auxiliaries and assistants
  • Health professionals such as nurses and midwives
  • Actuaries, economists and statisticians
  • Architects
  • Quality control and planning engineers
  • Laboratory technicians

The above-mentioned job types are much sought after in the UK and employers are seeking candidates to fill vacant positions that are available due to the gap in the labour market.

Who decides what is on the list?

The shortage occupation lists are recommended by the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) and are revised a few times every year.

Benefits of applying for a job that is listed on the shortage occupation list

  • At a minimum, applicants who are applying for a job listed on the shortage occupation list and are not ‘new entrants’ need to earn at least £20,480 and at least £10.10 per hour or at least 80% of the going rate of their profession, whichever is higher, for the Skilled Worker visa category. A role on the shortage occupation list is worth 20 of the 70 points required to obtain a skilled worker. Combined with the mandatory criteria – having an acceptable standard of English, an offer from a licensed sponsor and the required RQF level 3 or above skill level, which are worth 50 points – will ensure that candidates in these roles reach the requisite 70 points.
  • A job listed on the shortage occupation list also gives you a further benefit of paying a lower UK visa application fee.
